Read today's Denver Post article on how Denver law firms are hosting events for clients and delegates during this week's Democratic National Convention.

Friday Food Bag Program Applauds Frontier Donation

Early in August, Frontier Refining Inc.’s made a $13,655 donation to the Cheyenne office for the Holland & Hart Foundation’s Friday Food Bag program. The Foundation sponsored program distributes food bags each week of the school year to Cheyenne children who are at risk for hunger. Frontier’s generosity will help Cheyenne extend Holland & Hart’s efforts to impact childhood hunger in the community. The Frontier volunteers who work with the Friday Food Bag program are an enthusiastic crew, and to see that enthusiasm matched by this level of vendor contribution is inspiring. The Friday Food Bag program was initiated last fall by the Cheyenne office and over the upcoming school year, the program anticipates that it will be able to deliver over 4000 food bags, approximately 125 each Friday, to Laramie County School District #1, Head Start, Boys & Girls Club, Safehouse, and Laramie County School District #2. 

Holland & Hart volunteers, lawyers and staff, came together and worked together to contribute to their community.  They not only identified the need, but spent endless hours organizing the project, rallying not just the Holland & Hart community, but much of the Cheyenne community, friends, families and clients. Holland & Hart is grateful for Frontier's generous contribution!

Anne Castle to Speak at Cornell's Sustainable Conference

Cornell University Law School has invited Holland & Hart attorney, Anne Castle, to speak at their November 2008 conference: Defining Sustainable Development: Land Use, Climate Change and Water Resources. The conference will explore the concept of sustainability through law and its impact upon business. Castle is a practitioner in water rights and water quality law, and has over twenty-five years of experience in water rights practice. She has represented a wide variety of clients in water court litigation, including adjudications of water rights, changes in water rights and plans for augmentation, and appeals. The conference seeks to find how clean water can be protected, controlled and distributed as it becomes more scarce. Castle will talk about Water Rights and how particular water laws or regulations affect her practice.

Getting Beyond The Catchy Phrase and Creating a Trial Theme That Truly Works

By now, the advice to "use a trial theme" is or should be familiar to any practicing litigator. It is intuitive to discover and use a statement that unifies and embraces your view of the entire case. But crafting the right theme involves much more than thinking of a phrase that rolls off the tongue and sticks in the memory. As important as it is for a theme to do both, a theme needs to do more in order to serve the critical function of being that central representation and reference point for decision-makers.  Learn how a theme works, what makes a theme effective, and how to use theme throughout your case.

Holland & Hart Attorneys Publish Book on Commercial Leasing

Holland & Hart attorneys Beat Steiner and Edyn Jessup wrote Commercial Leasing in Colorado A Practical Guide, which was published by Bradford Publishing Company in July of this year.

Written with Colorado real estate attorneys and leasing brokers in mind, Steiner and Jessup's book covers basic legal principles while highlighting the strategies used behind the scenes in negotiating, drafting, and modifying lease provisions. Steiner and Jessup have also provided useful checklists for every common lease clause, a glossary of legal and real estate terms, and several example leasing forms.

Former Holland & Hart attorney Judge Prince Ranked No. 1 in State

Congratulations for former Holland & Hart partner and member of the management committee, David Prince, for being named the highest ranked judge in the State of Colorado.  Prince, who is now a Judge in the Fourth District, was appointed to the bench in April 2006, was ranked No. 1 in the state out of the 89 trial judges up for retention, according to the Colorado Commission on Judicial Performance. At Holland & Hart, Prince primarily handled civil litigation.

Bob Keatinge Honored with Lubaroff Awards

Holland & Hart attorney Robert Keatinge is this year's recipient of the American Bar Association's Martin I. Lubaroff award, which is presented annually to a lawyer for lifelong service to LLC, partnership, and unincorporated entities law. The award is named for Martin Lubaroff who contributed substantially to the work of the ABA Business Law Section's LLCs, Partnerships and Unincorporated Entities committee. Keatinge will be honored at the fall meeting of this committee. Keatinge is of counsel to the Denver law firm of Holland & Hart LLP and practices in the areas of business organizations, taxation and professional responsibility.

Scott Martinez Named to Election Reform Commission

Holland & Hart attorney Scott Martinez was appointed to the new Colorado Election Reform Commission by Gov. Bill Ritter on August 11th. The 11-member commission was created by the legislature to study election issues, including the various voting systems, and to draft a report of findings and recommendations to legislators in 2009. Martinez was selected for his experience in Colorado election law which he practices in the firm's Denver office.

Significant Revisions Proposed to ESA Section 7 Consultation Regulations

On August 11, 2008, Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne announced proposed revisions to the Endangered Species Act (“ESA”) Section 7 consultation regulations. The proposed revisions are intended to clarify definitions regarding effects and causation, streamline the process by eliminating unnecessary consultations, and address the treatment of climate change issues in the consultation process. Publication of the proposed rule in the Federal Register is expected on August 15, followed by a 30-day comment period.

The process of developing, building, and operating renewable energy projects is filled with potential legal, regulatory, and financial issues. Five of Holland & Hart's leading project finance attorneys will speak at the Electric Utility Consultants, Inc. Annual Conference on Renewable Energy Project Development and Finance on November 6-7 in Greenwood Village, CO. They will take participants through the entire project development process for a comprehensive overview of legal implications and demands. Mark Safty, chair of Holland & Hart's Project Development and Finance Group, will speak, as well as attorneys Maureen McInerny, Elizabeth Mitchell, Giji John, and Billi McCullough, on topics ranging from Leasing Land for the Development of Wind and Solar Projects as well as permitting, connecting and financing issues. The conference is being put on by EUCI, a major conference promoter in the energy business and will be a day-and-a-half event for developers, lenders, lawyers and consultants.
